Karan Johar Reveals Student Of The Year Suffered A Loss Of Rs 20 Crore, ‘Spent Like Crazy On It’

Student Of The Year faced a loss of Rs 20 crore
Recently, filmmaker Karan Johar who helmed Student of the Year revealed that despite earning a place in the hearts of audiences, the film suffered a major loss financially. During an interaction with a leading daily, Johar stated, “It happens a lot of times in showbiz that a film appears to be a blockbuster but it fails to perform monetarily.
He went on to share how back in 2012, when his outing ‘Student of the Year’ released in the theatres, it went on to become a cult film with all three of the newcomers getting rave reviews from the audience. But even after earning Rs 70 crore at the box office, the makers had to incur a loss of Rs 20 crore on it. KJo mentioned that he had “spent like crazy” on the film.
Signed 3-film deal with the actors to recover the loss
The director disclosed that he signed a three-film deal with Alia, Varun and Sidharth at a subsidized rate. The loss on Student Of The Year was recovered after Sidharth did Hasee Toh Phasee while Alia and Varun starred in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. The movies were bankrolled by Karan’s Dharma Productions.

Karan Johar is gearing up for his directorial Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The family entertainer stars Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan. It will hit the screens on April 28, 2023.
