Shamshera, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Vaani Kapoor, has had a lacklustre box office debut. The film, which reportedly cost Rs 150 crore to produce, has so far brought in Rs 36 crore. Shamshera performances were canceled in numerous locations due to low attendance. The movie is currently regarded as a major failure. And by expressing regret for giving up on the project, director Karan Malhotra has taken responsibility for the disaster.
Bollywood hasn’t had a fantastic year in 2022 thus far because a number of its movies haven’t performed well at the box office. One of the largest production companies in Bollywood, Yash Raj Films, has sadly produced four consecutive flops since the outbreak. Bunty Aur Babli 2, which was released in November of last year, served as the catalyst. The movie starring Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan made Rs. 12.50 crore at the box office. Even Jayeshbhai Jordaar, starring Ranveer Singh, which was released in May of this year, did poorly at the box office, earning only Rs. 15.59 crore.
Although Bunty Aur Babli 2 and Jayeshbhai Jordaar had a modest budget, Samrat Prithviraj and Shamshera were the two most anticipated projects from YRF. The Akshay Kumar-starring movie failed miserably, earning only Rs. 68.05 crores. Shamshera, starring Ranbir Kapoor, was out last week and has so far made Rs. 37.05 crores. So even this movie is a failure. The Great Indian Family, starring Vicky Kaushal and Manushi Chhillar, Tiger 3 by Salman Khan, and Pathaan by Shah Rukh Khan are currently available on YRF. According to a source in Box Office Globally, YRF has opted to postpone the Vicky and Manushi starrer, which hasn’t yet been formally revealed and focus solely on blockbusters like Pathaan and Tiger 3.
Expectations for Tiger 3 are pretty high given the success of the Tiger franchise and Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming homecoming after a four-year absence in Pathaan. Tiger 3 will visit theatres on Eid 2023, and Pathaan, which also features Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, is scheduled to debut on January 25th, 2023.
It will be fascinating to see if Pathaan and Tiger 3 will provide YRF the much-needed commercial success.
