Indian actress and costume designer, Sarika faced a lot of struggles to reach where she is today. She became the sole breadwinner of her family after her father abandoned them. Beginning her career as a child artist in the mid-1960s with films like Majhli Didi and Hamraaz, Sarika went on to lead the movies with Geet Gaata Chal, Madhu Malti, and Jaani Dushman. At the peak of her career, she decided to settle down with Kamal Haasan and quit acting. However, the two separated after 16 years of marriage and Sarika made a comeback to screen with films such as Bheja Fry and Parzania.
In a recent interview, the actress recalled the hardships she faced as a heroine. She revealed that senior actors used to taunt her saying ‘that’s not how a heroine should be’ when she didn’t apply makeup and backcombed her hair while shooting for Griha Pravesh.
In a conversation with a leading portal, the Dil Aur Deewar actress stated, “When I did film Griha Pravesh, I didn’t like using makeup and some of the senior actors came to me and said ‘yeh kya hai na back combing kiya hai na makeup lagaya hai yeh aise heroine thodi na hoti hai.’ So that’s the idea of growing and evolving of cinema.”
For the unversed, Griha Pravesh was released in 1979. It was directed by Basu Bhattacharya and starred Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, and Sarika.
Workwise, Sarika was last seen in Sooraj Barjatya’s Uunchai alongside stellar actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Danny Denzongpa, Neena Gupta and Parineeti Chopra.
