Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn has voiced his concerns about the increasing manipulation of box office numbers, calling for more transparency in the industry. Speaking at the Pinkvilla Masterclass, the “Singham Again” star emphasized that while the industry is still far from perfect, strides are being made toward clearer and more reliable box office data.
Devgn highlighted the need for a system similar to China’s, where box office figures are updated hourly and provide more granular details, such as average ticket prices and audience demographics. “It is required, and slowly, I think it is getting there. In a couple of years, everything is going to be transparent,” he said. His sentiments were echoed by filmmaker Rohit Shetty, who has worked closely with Devgn on the “Singham” franchise.
The actor also lamented the increasing focus on box office numbers over creative passion, noting that filmmakers today seem more concerned with financial returns than the quality of the script. “First, there was only passion. Now the numbers have come in. And it hurts,” he shared.
On the professional front, Devgn’s “Singham Again” has proven a massive success at the box office, crossing ₹250 crore since its release on November 1. Directed by Rohit Shetty, the action-packed film also stars Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, and Salman Khan. It marks the third installment in the popular “Singham” franchise, following the 2011 and 2014 releases.
Devgn’s call for transparency is gaining attention in an industry increasingly scrutinized for inflated collection figures and the impact of such practices on filmmaking and audience trust.
