Akshay Kumar Once Took 36 Takes For One Shot, Impatient Co-Actor Sridevi Says ‘Make Him Rehearse’
Sridevi, often hailed as the “first female superstar” of Indian cinema, continues to hold a cherished place in the hearts of millions, even as it’s been nearly seven years since her untimely passing. With a career that spanned over five decades, Sridevi left an indelible mark across multiple languages and genres. One film in her extensive repertoire that remains memorable, though for unfortunate reasons, is Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin. The film, which paired Sridevi with Akshay Kumar, was shot in 1994 but faced a decade-long delay before its release in 2004. Despite the anticipation, the film ultimately flopped at the box office.
Directed by Pankaj Parashar, Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin remains significant not just for its storyline, but for being the only film where Sridevi and Akshay Kumar appeared together. During a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Parashar recalled how the film played a crucial role in Akshay’s early career, helping him gain significant exposure. The young actor was even featured in a Star & Style magazine cover story alongside the legendary Sridevi, marking a pivotal moment in his rise to fame.
Reflecting on the making of the film, Parashar shared fond memories of Akshay’s energy and enthusiasm, even at a time when he was still unknown in the industry. “He was a simple and nice person, full of humour,” Parashar said. “He would wake up at 5 in the morning, waking me up too. Then he’d take me to hilltops for yoga and show me positions, encouraging me to do them.” Parashar noted that Akshay’s boundless energy was evident even then, contrasting with his nervousness while working alongside the established Sridevi.
At the time of filming, there was no mistaking who the bigger star was, with Sridevi’s immense presence overshadowing Akshay’s early career jitters. Parashar fondly recalled moments where Akshay, often flubbing his lines, struggled to meet Sridevi’s professional standards. “She came to me and said, ‘Make him rehearse yaar. He’s already on his 36th take,’” he laughed. Despite the tension, Sridevi, ever the professional, remained patient, and when Akshay finally nailed his scene, the entire crew applauded, boosting his confidence.
Sridevi, however, recognized Akshay’s potential early on and was impressed by his raw talent. Her unwavering support during the making of the film helped shape his career, showcasing her kindness and mentorship alongside her unparalleled star power. Even in a film that was ultimately unsuccessful, the bond formed between Sridevi and Akshay remains an unforgettable chapter in Indian cinema history.
