Actor Ranbir Kapoor has addressed recent criticism regarding the portrayal of violence in his films “Animal (2023)” and “Sanju (2018)” during the ongoing 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
At the event, a participant expressed concern over the violent themes in “Animal” and “Sanju”, arguing that such films promote the idea that violence is a means to achieve success. The individual also questioned the encouragement of films with such content and praised older films for their strong storytelling.
Responding thoughtfully, Kapoor acknowledged the validity of the criticism, emphasizing the responsibility actors have in shaping the narratives portrayed on screen. “I completely agree with your opinion. As an actor, it is our responsibility to bring movies that positively change society,” he said. He added, “Having said that, I’m an actor, and it’s very important that I also dabble in different genres and characters and play varied roles. But what you are saying is correct. We have to be more responsible towards the kind of films we make.”
Kapoor’s remarks come after “Animal”—directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga—was met with mixed reviews. Critics highlighted its violent tone and themes of toxic masculinity and misogyny. The film, which features an ensemble cast including Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, and Rashmika Mandanna, has sparked debates for its graphic content and controversial portrayal of relationships.
Similarly, “Sanju”, a biographical film about actor Sanjay Dutt directed by Rajkumar Hirani, also faced criticism for its depiction of certain aspects of Dutt’s life, including violence and substance abuse. Kapoor’s portrayal of Dutt in the 2018 film received widespread acclaim, but it too has been scrutinised for its handling of sensitive issues.
Looking ahead, Kapoor is set to star in “Love and War”, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The highly anticipated period drama, which will also feature Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, was officially announced in January 2024. Kapoor is also slated to appear in “Ramayana”, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, alongside Sai Pallavi and other notable actors.
As Kapoor continues to take on diverse roles, his acknowledgement of the responsibility actors bear in choosing their projects reflects a growing awareness of the social impact of cinema.
