In a much-anticipated revelation, producer Ratan Jain has finally addressed rumors surrounding a potential sequel to the 1993 Bollywood classic Baazigar. Speaking to ETimes, Jain confirmed that discussions with superstar Shah Rukh Khan are ongoing, although no concrete plans or script have been finalized for Baazigar 2. According to Jain, a sequel will only proceed if Khan reprises his role, a decision he considers essential for the film’s success.
“We keep talking to Shah Rukh about Baazigar 2,” Jain revealed, adding that while the dialogue is active, no substantial progress has been made yet. “It will definitely be made,” he assured, showing confidence that the project will eventually take shape, although the specifics remain undecided.
The original Baazigar, directed by Abbas-Mustan, holds a special place in Bollywood history as one of Shah Rukh Khan’s breakout performances, marking a bold departure from traditional hero roles. The story follows a young man (played by Khan) who seeks revenge for his father’s death by infiltrating the life of the man responsible. This antihero narrative, combined with themes of love, betrayal, and retribution, made the film a unique addition to Bollywood’s repertoire at the time. Baazigar was a risk for Khan, who portrayed a morally ambiguous character, yet it became a box-office sensation and cemented his place as a leading actor.
Interestingly, Baazigar was initially offered to several prominent actors of the era, who declined the role due to its unconventional portrayal of a protagonist with dark motives. Reports suggest that even Sridevi was approached for one of the female lead roles, adding to the film’s unique legacy in Bollywood lore.
Aside from Shah Rukh Khan, the film’s ensemble cast included notable actors like Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, Dalip Tahil, Johny Lever, and Siddharth. Its memorable music, composed by Anu Malik, also contributed to the film’s enduring popularity, with songs that remain classics to this day.
Loosely inspired by Ira Levin’s 1953 novel A Kiss Before Dying and its 1991 film adaptation, Baazigar has secured its place as a cult classic. As fans eagerly await news of a sequel, Jain’s statements spark hope that Baazigar 2 could someday return to screens, with Khan once again in the lead, capturing a new generation with its powerful themes of vengeance and drama.
