Celebrating Oceans: A Call To Protect The Blues

June 8 marks the commemoration of World Oceans Day and the theme this year is ‘The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods’. It is significant and relevant as well for it serves the root of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable development, which will run from 2021 to 2030. Oceans make up nearly 70% of the planet and it is a life source too. Though the water used is not much fit for drinking purposes, yet these magnificent water bodies serve the laps for a majority of aquatic organisms and plants too.

The oceans are prime producers of about 50% of Oxygen and not to forget the fact that it possesses in it a vast diversity and a major source of protein for the inhabitants of the earth. In a statement released by the UN to honor the oceans on World Oceans Day, it read, ‘To protect and preserve the oceans and the life it sustains, we must create a new balance rooted in a true understanding of the ocean and how humanity relates to it. We must build a connection to the ocean that is inclusive, innovative, and informed by the lessons from the past.’

According to the UN, we are now taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. The International body further said to protect and preserve the ocean and all it sustains, we must create a new balance, which is rooted in a true understanding of the ocean and how humanity relates to it.  It said that we must build a connection to the ocean that is inclusive, innovative, and informed by lessons from the past.

This year’s event is produced by The Division of Ocean Affairs of the UN in collab with the non-profit Oceanic Global. The UN had declared already that this year’s event would mostly be digital owing to the pandemic. The UN and other organizations took to Twitter to protect and unify the oceans, contributing towards sustainable care and protecting them.
