Champion Wrestler Vinesh Phogat Suspended By Wrestling Federation of India

Vinesh Phogat is part of a family of wrestlers, the Phogat family that gave India plenty of international medals. Vinesh who is a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist and current Asian Games champion withdrew out of the Tokyo Olympics after losing in the second round. But Vinesh Phogat has now been temporarily suspended by the Wrestling Federation of India for refusing to train with the Indian team and breaching the apparel code in Tokyo. Vinesh Phogat married her fellow wrestler Somvir Rathee in 2018. Somvir Rathee is a two-time national championship gold medalist. Vinesh Phogat suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in her knee during the 2016 Rio Olympics that was a U-turn in her career. Due to this reason, she requested for her regular physiotherapist Poornima R Ngomdir to be present at Tokyo Olympics but she was denied for her request. Although a physiotherapist was present at the Tokyo games, she wanted to her have own physiotherapist for her health purpose.

Vinesh is the cousin sister of the ‘Dangal’ sisters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. While Vinesh didn’t get training with the Indian wrestlers while she was staying in the Tokyo Olympics Athletes Village but she rigorously followed the schedule of the wrestlers. As there is no rule that says that she has to train with Indian wrestlers only while at the Olympics.

Vinesh Phogat is the first Indian wrestler to win gold at both the Asian and Commonwealth Games. She was also the first Indian athlete to receive the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards in 2019. But unfortunately, Vinesh Phogat has been suspended by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)  for refusing to train with the Indian team and breach of the apparel code at the Tokyo Olympics.
