Chef Kunal Kapoor has been granted a divorce by the Delhi High Court on the grounds of cruelty. The court approved Kapoor’s petition, in which he had levied allegations against his wife. His wife had also made allegations against him. The court granted them divorce based on cruelty.

The bench was composed of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Neena Bansal Krishna. They observed that the conduct of his wife towards him was “devoid of dignity and empathy” towards him. “When such is the nature of one spouse towards the other, it brings disgrace to the very essence of marriage, and there is no possible reason as to why he should be compelled to live while enduring the agony of living together,” the court explained.

What Bench Observed?

The bench noted that even after separation, the husband has been providing monetary support for the education and well-being of the son as well as for maintaining the household.

They were perusing the WhatsApp messages exchanged between the parties. The court observed that the husband was not allowed to meet or talk to his son. The wife has evaded the meeting on one pretext or another while simultaneously demanding payments from him.

“Such deprivation of company of their son with the malicious intent to create a rift between the father and child, no doubt, will put any parent to distress,” the court said.

It was noted that the husband and his family were badly hurt and suffered a loss of respect in society. He made efforts to stay with his wife to save his married life.

The court also observed that screaming high and using filthy language, even if not directly abusing the spouse, is too harsh to expect the spouse at the receiving end to accept it.

Kapur got married in 2008. He had alleged that his wife would call the police frequently. She also threatened to spread rumours against him on social media as he started gaining public attention.

The celebrity chef also claimed that while he was shooting for the Masterchef India show in 2016, his wife barged into the studio with their son and created a ruckus. The custody of the son is with the wife. Following the incident, Kapur got a restraining order against her.

His wife, however, has refuted every accusation, claiming that she sacrificed her career to support her family and husband. She also claimed that her in-laws frequently taunted her for having a job rather than doing housework.
