Deepika Padukone is one of the most outspoken people in Bollywood when it comes to mental health concerns. In 2015, the ‘Piku’ actress revealed her battle with depression. Although the celebrity has grown stronger over the years, Deepika stated in a recent interview with a beauty magazine that her mother was the first to understand that she required professional treatment.
Speaking with Allure, Deepika said, “Speaking out about my experience with mental illness and standing up for what I believe in, I think all of that happened around the same time”. She went on to say that a year previously, she awoke to feel uninspired, directionless, and unwilling to face the world.
The actress from ’83 recalls crying in front of her mother. I had this blockbuster year and everything was going perfectly well. I was in this relationship [with the person] who I’m married to now. And everything was perfect. Like, how could life be any better? I think that’s probably how it seemed to everyone around me, including myself,” shared the actress.
Deepika revealed that her mother was the one who initially saw that her daughter needed treatment and linked her with a family friend and counsellor, who collaborated with a physician to diagnose the actress with severe depression. According to accounts, the actor was given medicine right away.
Deepika admitted that she battled and suffered for months since she didn’t know anyone who had gone through similar experiences. She believed that if she shared her story and even one person could relate to her symptoms, she would have accomplished her goal.
On the Work front, Deepika was most recently seen in Shakun Batra’s Gehraiyaan, in which she co-starred with Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, and Dhairya Karwa. The actress will next be seen in Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter and Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham’s Pathaan.
