Asuran is a Tamil-language period action drama film written and directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu that was released in India in 2019. Poomani’s novel Vekkai is the inspiration for the film. Dhanush and Manju Warrier appear in the film, with the latter making her Tamil debut. G. V. Prakash Kumar composed the film’s music, continuing his partnership with Vetrimaaran. The narrative of the film is inspired by the real-life massacre of Kilvenmani in 1968. Asuran was released on 4 October 2019. The film was commercially successful at the box office. Asuran was also screened in the Best Foreign Film category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards. In Telugu, the film was remade as Narappa, with Venkatesh Daggubati and Priyamani in the major roles.
Dhanush had previously received a National Award for the same film earlier this year.
The BRICS Film Festival is being held in conjunction with the IFFI for the first time. The BRICS film festival featured films from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
