Farhan Akhtar Calls Cricketer Rohit Sharma ‘Superstar’ For Stepping Down, Slams Critics
Filmmaker-actor Farhan Akhtar has praised Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma for his decision to step down from the fifth Test against Australia, citing his selflessness and dedication to the team’s success. Taking to Instagram on Saturday, Farhan shared his admiration for Rohit, describing him as a “superstar” and expressing frustration over the criticism he has faced.
In his post, Farhan wrote, “This guy has done so much for Indian cricket and captained our team incredibly well over the years.” He emphasised Rohit’s impressive batting skills, noting that the cricketer has delivered numerous memorable performances. However, Farhan acknowledged that cricket can be a tough sport, where even the best players go through lean patches. “We’ve seen the greatest batsmen and bowlers struggle for form,” he said, mentioning how fans often wish for players to take breaks to regain form. He then highlighted that Rohit’s voluntary decision to step down in the team’s interest was a rare and commendable act.

Farhan criticized those who tore Rohit down instead of applauding his decision. “This is a guy who is putting the team’s chances ahead of his own form,” Farhan added, underscoring the selflessness in Rohit’s action. He encouraged fans to reconsider their harsh judgment and appreciate Rohit’s leadership qualities. “Ask yourself, why would anyone do this if this is how the world responds?” he questioned. Farhan ended the post by reaffirming his belief in Rohit’s strength of character and leadership, expressing confidence that the captain would return to the field soon.
Rohit, who had a difficult series with Australia, explained his decision to step aside from the final Test, saying he wasn’t in form. He reassured fans that he wasn’t retiring and emphasized the need for a player in form for the crucial match. Rohit’s absence from the first Test due to the birth of his second child and his continued struggles at the crease led to speculation that his red-ball career might be over. However, Rohit clarified that he was not stepping away from the game entirely.
On the professional front, Farhan Akhtar is set to star in the military action film 120 Bahadur, where he plays an army officer in the 1962 Indo-China war. The film, directed by Razneesh Ghai, is slated for release in 2025.
