People are praising Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s newest work, the Netflix show Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The director talked about making the show, which was set in Punjab before freedom, which is now Pakistan, in an interview with Indiewire. He also said that he felt a lot of love from people in Pakistan, who are very excited to see how Heeramandi has grown.
What Sanjay Leela Bhansali said
Bhansali was asked about the show’s setting in the interview and said, “There was so much love that I received from Pakistan. People were waiting anxiously for it to be told.” There was a time when India was one country, not two. This piece brings us all together in some way. We own these people just as much as they own us. I believe they belong to both of us, and people in both countries are very happy that the show is finally being made. As of now, I still believe that we are all one and linked in many ways. On both sides, there is a lot of love for people. A few people would want to make problems, but that’s not important.
“I don’t mind being made fun of…”
The director also said that it doesn’t bother him when people criticize him. “Something about the characters in my work speaks to people.” That’s why they talk about it. Many like it and many don’t. It’s part of the exchange between the viewer and the director. He said, “I don’t mind being loved when they love me, and I don’t mind not liking my work when they don’t like it.”
