Holi Skincare Guide: Preparing And Protecting Your Skin From Chemicals

Holi is a coruscating festival of colours. However, the colours used in Holi today come with synthetic pigments. They not only damage our skin and hair but are also hazardous to our health. These synthetic or chemical-filled colours contain chemicals like lead oxide, mercury sulphide, copper sulphate, etc. These chemicals can penetrate your skin and cause damage to your eyes, skin and lungs. Hence, it becomes really important to protect your hair and skin from Holi colours.

  • Always secure your skin with a broad SPF sunscreen. Make sure to wear waterproof sunscreen Never forget to protect your skin from the sun.
  • Tone your skin with a good toner. The primary characteristic of the toner is that it reduces the pore size and prevents the seepage of Holi colours through the pores of your skin. You can also rub ice on your face, which will help to shut down all the pores and thus restrict colours.
  • Wear cotton clothes that cover most parts of your body. Make sure your clothes are comfortable and airy.

Post-Holi Skin Care Tips

After you are done playing, it’s time to remove the Holi colours.

  • Firstly, take cotton clothes and wipe off the powdered colour. Don’t be harsh on your skin.
  • When it comes to soaps, use a mild soap.
  • Get rid of the Holi colours with lukewarm water. It is a common misconception that colour removal can be done by using warm water. On the contrary, the colours stick more strongly to your skin when you bathe in warm water.

  • After removing all of the colour, moisturize your skin deeply. You must take care of your dry skin. To moisturize the skin, oil can also be applied.
  • At home, prepare face packs for your skin. The store-bought face packs will only add chemicals, so steer clear of them.
  • Face packs containing yoghurt and honey will provide your skin with deep moisture—just what you need after the chemicals’ drying effect.
  • You can make your cleanser at home using cold milk and any oil that you use (it can also be your body oil or vegetable oils). Mix well and apply with a cotton ball. This will remove the colour, repair the damage done by the sun, and also moisturize your skin.
