The Buzz

It can only be so much secretive when you gather 150 pan-India tech bloggers at one spot. The dope on P9 was a warm buzz afloat prior to its unveiling at Huawei Tech Show – even its exclusive availability with Flipkart was evidenced on our phone screens by 12.30 pm well prior to live announcement time of 3 pm. They did though successfully manage to conceal hints on dropping Matebook and TalkBand B3 – other two international superhits, of which we only saw a product-shot, and are awaiting gingerly since. They are supposed to debut soon in India.

The Newbie

Back to what has just been sprung on us. P9, from Huawei’s enviable P-series lineage which had picked up three EISA awards on trot, heroes the non-bump phone-camera like no other. P. Sanjeev, VP Sales, Huawei mentioned that this model collected another EISA just two days back in London. Not for nothing. Collaborating with Leica Camera AG – manufacturers of cameras and sport optics products; leaders in imaging technology for more than 100 years, brings together the best-in-class hardware and software, from optical lenses, to sensors, to image processing algorithms, empowering users to capture the highest-quality images. Harnessing their expertise in dual-lens camera comprising 6 layers – thus effectively 12 pieces of lens ushers in a new paradigm in smart-phone photography – make it professional smart-phone photography.

Vision – Pocket DSLR

Two 12MP rear cameras – one dedicated to RGB sensor, the other, a monochrome sensor which acquires picture details – in tandem create images of superior detail, depth and color by capturing more light thus have excellent no-grain low-light performance – an ingenious concept-level idea that delivers. There is an 8MP front-facing camera which has an f/2.4 aperture and these lenses support phase detect AF (PDAF), having an f/2.2 maximum aperture. They come with a dual tone flash with 1.25 micron pixel size on the sensors.

Boman Irani – most-time actor-sometime photographer, Darren Centofanti, pro-clicker for at least 25 years and Sushmita Sen, full-time good-looker were brought in to speak, educate and pose respectively about/ with the device.

Darren demoed how one can utilize Pro modes by customizing ISO, shutter speed, exposure, auto focus and White Balance and choose between three film modes: Standard, Vivid and Smooth. “In built vivid mode makes your pic pop as if photo-shopped a bit”, said Darren. Monochrome mode may evoke nostalgia with powerful and evocative black and white images that only a true monochrome camera can.

Expansion on Vision

It also has a video camera capable of shooting in Full HD at 60fps to the accompaniment of different modes such as monochrome, HDR, Beauty video, panorama and such. Then there’s wide-aperture to experiment with innovative visual effects to create unique images and content. If that’s not enough this camera  lets you control aperture in in-camera post to create bokeh and other depth-of-field effects, while keeping the main object in sharp focus.[Image: header-background]

Though they didn’t harp on sound P9 comes with integrated speaker box with bottom speaker design for clarity, power and Huawei’s super wide sound (SWS) bringing in immersive experience.

Space Agers

Of course it’s targeted at smart-user segment but also who are tech-savvy and fashionable. Fashion is writ with aeronautical-grade aluminium, superior-grade

2.5D glass and constructed with neo- techniques of finish like brushed hairlines and micron-level metal polishing to create a translucent metal surface. To hit home run they have become official phone partner for Amazon India Fashion Week.

Vroom

Fashion is nothing without vroom. It is powered by patented Kirin 955 2.5GHz 64-bit ARM-based processor coupled with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and backed by 3,000 mAh high-density battery. Virtual-triple-antenna architecture will provide robust and seamless connectivity to all cellular and Wi-Fi networks.

Saftey First

Security is taken care by Huawei’s own biometric fingerprint recognition technology that can recognize wet or partial fingerprints.

Post-Sales

VIP service options marks its after-sales service – 1 year warranty, 3 months accidental damage warranty (Only Screen), free postal repair service- pick up and drop.

Besides these is a bundle of what-nots – ROG tech, push email-drafting, and so forth.

Presi Speaketh

Earlier speaking at the top, Peter Zhai,  new President of Huawei India Consumer Business Group mentioned Huawei to be third largest in world – No. 1 in China with 18.6% market share and that every sixth person has experienced big H at least once. “While the world is yet to get grip on 4G, we are reaching for 5G”, said Zhai adding down the line “We are branding with seven top international soccer clubs and may extend it to Indian sports as well. ”

This year Huawei aims to open 50,000 stores worldwide. Zhai signed of saying Huawei is entering this segment after a period of almost 3 years and asked for acceptance from India to fuel mutual growth story.
