‘I believed that dark skin was not pretty’: Priyanka Chopra On Endorsing Fairness Creams In The Past

It’s safe to say that Priyanka Chopra Jonas has come a long way. The Baywatch star recently got candid about the way she feels on endorsing fairness or skin lightening creams in the past. She regrets her decision and recalls applying talcum powder all over her face as a child to look fairer, as she was made to believe that only light skin was pretty.

Now, Mrs. Jonas can be seen gearing up for the release of her memoir, ‘Unfinished’ which will be out in February this year, and the buzz around it is building up.

In an interview with Marie Claire, the actor explains, “In fact, doing it is still a check [mark] when you are a female actor, but it’s awful. And it was awful for me, for a little girl who used to put talcum-powder cream on my face because I believed that dark skin was not pretty,” she added.

Mrs. Jonas continued, “Skin lightening was so normalized in South Asia; it’s such a large industry that everyone was doing it. In fact, doing it is still a check when you are a female actor, but it’s awful.” The actress also revealed that she is the dusky one in her family and that all her cousins are ‘fair’. She disclosed that her Punjabi family would call her ‘kaali’. At 13, Priyanka wanted to use fairness creams in hope of getting her complexion changed to a ‘lighter’ version.

Priyanka didn’t stop there and further shared the bullying experience she faced during her high school days. “It’s so difficult to hear you talk about it right now. In high school, I feel like the kids who were after me didn’t even understand why. I think it’s that they decided that they were more powerful than someone else, me, and when you pick on someone, it’s because you’re insecure.”

Priyanka Chopra is one strong woman to have gone through all that in her life. However, she learned from her past mistakes and moved on. Now she’s all about believing in who she is and aims to go only upwards from here. We hope that Priyanka will be spilling more beans in her upcoming memoir as it is soon to be released.

She was also recently seen alongside Rajkummar Rao in ‘The White Tiger.’ The film received a lot of appreciation from fans as well as critics.
