While Meena Kumari’s marriage to Kamal Amrohi was faltering, she discovered solace in Gulzar. Their mutual passion for poetry and shayaris drew them closer. Though Meena was celebrated for her remarkable acting, she also had a deep love for writing poetry, known only to a select few in her inner circle.

During the shooting of Benazir, Meena Kumari and Gulzar formed a friendship. Gulzar discovered her passion for poetry and inspired her to write more. However, soon after, Meena’s health began to decline, and she was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis.

Despite her fragile health, Meena Kumari agreed to star in Mere Apne, directed by Gulzar. Even as her condition worsened rapidly, she saw the film through to completion. On March 31, 1972, she bid farewell to the world. Before her death, however, she entrusted her most treasured possessions, her poetry and shayaris, to Gulzar, the person she trusted deeply and who cherished them the most.

After Meena Kumari’s passing, Gulzar ensured that her poetic talent received the recognition it deserved. Known for pouring her deepest emotions into her poetry, Meena’s verses were compiled by Gulzar and published in a book titled Meena Kumari Ki Shayari. He also released Tanha Chand, another collection featuring her heartfelt poems.

Meena Kumari’s life was marked by tragedy and unfulfilled longing. Despite being one of the most celebrated actresses of her era, the love and affection she yearned for largely eluded her. Yet, amid her sorrows, Gulzar’s presence brought a spark of hope, making her feel alive once more. Whether their bond was romantic or purely rooted in admiration remains a mystery.
