Have you gained weight? Are your old jeans which you used to wear in your 20s are not able to fit in them? Then this article is for you. According to Newcastle University’s Professor Roy Taylor( one of the world’s leading physicians) – if people’s waists are larger than they were in their early 20s, they are “carrying too much fat” and there’s a possibility of developing type 2 diabetes.
An early study found that people of normal weight with type 2 diabetes could “achieve remission” by losing weight. Eight in 12 people managed to “get rid” of their condition by losing 10 to 15% of their body weight. According to Taylor, Doctors say there are different causes or symptoms of Diabetics in people who are not overweight. But have gained weight since their 20s. They have a high chance of 2type Diabetics.
In the research, the participants followed a low-calorie weight loss plan. In this, they have to consume 800 calories per day. And they completed 3 rounds of it until they lost 10-15% weight. After which scans showed the reduction of fat from the liver. And eight of the 12 participants had their type 2 diabetes go into remission, which was defined as having blood sugar levels under control and patients no longer needing any medication.
Taylor said the results, while preliminary, “demonstrate very clearly that diabetes is not caused by obesity but by being too heavy for your own body. As a rule of thumb, your waist size should be the same now as when you were 21. If you can’t get into the same size trousers now, you are carrying too much fat and therefore at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, even if you aren’t overweight.”
Dr. Lucy Chambers, the head of research communications at Diabetes UK, which funded the Retune study, said she welcomed the results but cautioned that they were early, with full results expected in 2022. She said the findings will help advance our understanding of how internal body fat contributes to type 2 diabetes.
