Indian Footballer Sunil Chhetri Surpasses Lionel Messi In International Goals

The Indian football team Captain and striker, Sunil Chhetri, recently surpassed Lionel Messi to become the second-highest active international goal scorer with 74 strikes. The 36-year-old footballer achieved this feat on Monday during the match against Bangladesh in the joint preliminary qualifying rounds for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

The winning striker now stands just a goal away from entering world football’s all-time top-10. Chhetri, who helped India register their first win in six years in World Cup qualifiers, now stands only behind Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (103) in the active international goal scorers’ list. With 73 strikes, Ali Mabkhout of the United Arab Emirates is also above Messi – a six-time Ballon d’Or winner widely regarded as the greatest player of the modern era.

Chhetri added a second in injury time, taking his total to 74 goals for the country. India is already out of the race to qualify for the World Cup but can make it to the Asian Cup in China. India will next face Afghanistan in the qualifiers on June 15. All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel praised the captain for leading from the front.
Patel wrote on Twitter, “Our @IndianFootball skipper Sunil Chhetri adds another feather to his illustrious cap as he overtook Lionel Messi to become the second-highest active international goal scorer; with 74 goals.” “A big congratulations to Captain Fantastic & wishing him many more accolades in the future,” he added.
Sunil Chhetri achieving such a significant milestone is a proud moment for Indian Sports. The victory also raises a tough question: Despite being home for world-class athletes, India continues to trail behind others in all sports except cricket. It is time for Indian Sports Ministry to introspect on this imbalance.
