In 1947, after finishing his schooling at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, he started working for his father’s manufacturer of utility vehicles. He played a crucial role in growing the company’s clientele and introducing cutting-edge technology to India.

The firm developed substantially and established itself as one of India’s top automakers during his chairmanship. Mahindra was a pivotal contributor to the growth of the company’s tractor division, which, under his direction, grew to become the world’s largest tractor maker. Mahindra retired in 2012 after more than 48 years of service, and his nephew, Anand Mahindra, took over.
