Interview with Sumeer Kaur, CEO and Founder at Lashkaraa Ethic Wear Shop
1) Why did you become an entrepreneur?
I became an entrepreneur out of need. My father had left us, and the responsibility of the entire house had fallen on my head right after I graduated high school. My mother was unwell and could not work, so the responsibility of taking care of her and raising my younger sisters was entirely upon my shoulders. We were in a bad financial situation at the time and I knew I couldn’t raise my family with a minimum wage job, so entrepreneurship was the only option – I had to make it work.
2) Give me one word that describes you the best?
Determined
3) What are your goals for the company?
My goal for Lashkaraa is to expand the business to its fullest potential. I want our brand to be accessible to a woman living in a village as much as to a modern woman living in NYC. I want to leave our footprint all over the world and have something to offer for every woman, and cater to every budget.
4) Tell us 3 things you like and 3 things you dislike about your current position?
3 things I like:
I get to make the final decision and call all the shots
I get to work around my schedule
I get to bring my ideas to life and create clothes which I am very passionate about
3 things I dislike:
I actually don’t dislike anything about my current position. I believe all the stress and sleepless nights are totally worth it.
5) What are you really into outside of work?
I really enjoy traveling and eating. I love trying new foods, and outside of work, you can usually find me eating away at a restaurant.
6) Who do you admire in your industry?
I really admire my friend Sagar Shah from Karma Trendz Pvt Ltd. His story is very similar to mine, he didn’t start off with much either, still built a remarkable business. He is also very humble and one of the most honest people I know in this industry.
7) If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Be more patient. I have learned a lot of patience ever since I started this business. However, I still get very impatient sometimes.
8) What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I consider my greatest achievement to be able to create a space for my company in this industry. As someone who had absolutely zero knowledge of ethnic wear and only $2,000 dollars to begin with, I consider it a great feat to be where I am today.
