According to reports, Nakuul Mehta said, ‘We all know what kind of fight Vinesh had to go through and what circumstances she went through last year. With what is going on in the country right now, with the Kolkata incident, we have suddenly woken up and are protesting and disagreeing with what has been happening in the country for the past many years. But honestly, it should have started when our wrestlers were fighting the authorities in a case like this. We didn’t stand up for them, we woke up only when it was too late, and the same has happened today.’

Emphasizing the horrific Kolkata case, Nakuul says, ‘It takes some very horrific incident to wake us up, but the wrestlers were protesting in front of everyone in Delhi, yet no one blinked.’ According to reports, the actor admitted that Independence Day did not feel as festive this time because of the incident. He said, ‘I have been feeling it for a while. What happened is very horrific, but recently there was a case with a Dalit girl that was not reported and there are so many such incidents in our country that are happening every day and no one is taking cognizance of it. I am glad that people have woken up, but I hope this protest is not limited to one Instagram post. It needs constant support.’

The actor, being a man, asks other men to play their role on this whole issue. He said, ‘It is up to us men to take a stand and change the thinking at the ground level. Women have been facing this for a very long time and just protesting against them cannot be the only way. We need to make more efforts to make our women feel safe with us. As men, we should learn from this and try to be better. This is not the time to discuss men and women. It is time to create a safe space for women around us.’
