One of the hottest issues in South Korea right now is whether the members of BTS will have to serve in the army. Jin, the oldest band member, turns 30 in December and faces possible enlistment next year. This has caused a lot of debate among fans and others.
According to South Korean law, all able-bodied men are legally required to perform military service for 18-21 months. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule for athletes, classical and traditional musicians, and dancers who have won first place in prestigious competitions known to bring prestige to the nation.
Only the government can take action to give specific clauses without changing the law. Prior exemptions for competitors who excelled in undesignated competitions led to a discussion about the system’s fairness. Avoiding military obligations or granting exemptions is a delicate subject as it draught compels many to put their professional lives or academic pursuits on hold.
One survey recently found that 61% believe BTS should be exempt from military service, while 54% say they should serve in the military. The National Assembly has considered several conscription legislation revisions that would allow BTS members to be excused from serving. Still, no votes have been taken because of the widespread disagreement among members.
