Kangana Ranaut Invites Priyanka Gandhi to Watch ‘Emergency’; What Was Congress MP’s Response?
Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, gearing up for the release of her upcoming film Emergency, has revealed that she personally invited politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to watch the movie. Speaking to IANS, Kangana shared details of their interaction, which took place at the Parliament, where she extended the invitation with a touch of admiration and sincerity.
“I actually met Priyanka Gandhi in the Parliament,” Kangana said. “The first thing I told her was, ‘You should watch Emergency.’ She was very gracious and replied, ‘Yeah, maybe.’ So, let’s see if they want to watch the film.”
The movie, set to release on January 17, is a historical drama based on the controversial 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a state of emergency in India. Kangana not only stars as Indira Gandhi but also directs the film, a project she describes as a “sensitive and sensible portrayal” of the iconic leader.
Explaining her approach, Kangana said she took great care in presenting Indira Gandhi with dignity, steering clear of sensationalism. “When I started researching, I found there was an overwhelming focus on her personal life—her relationships and controversial equations. I thought, ‘There is so much more to her as a person.’ Especially with women, they’re often reduced to their relationships with men and sensational encounters. I wanted to go beyond that.”
Kangana emphasized the respect she holds for Indira Gandhi’s legacy. “She was a very loved leader. Apart from some very crazy things that happened during the Emergency, and a few controversies, she was celebrated. Being a three-time Prime Minister is not a joke. She was loved and celebrated by many.”
The actress urged audiences, including political figures, to watch the film to appreciate its balanced narrative. “I think everybody should see this film. It’s a dignified portrayal of an important episode in India’s history and of a personality as complex as Mrs. Gandhi.”
Emergency promises to explore the political and personal facets of Indira Gandhi, offering audiences a nuanced glimpse into a turbulent era in Indian history. With Kangana’s portrayal of the former Prime Minister, the film has already sparked anticipation ahead of its release.
