Karan Johar Says Many In Industry Live In ‘Delusion’: ‘It’s A Disease’

Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar, the driving force behind Dharma Productions, recently shared his candid thoughts on success, self-awareness, and the delusions within the film industry. In an interview with Komal Nahta, the director-producer admitted that he considers himself “more fortunate than talented” and emphasised the importance of realism in filmmaking.

Karan on His Success

Reflecting on his journey, Karan revealed that he did not feel he truly deserved his success until years after his debut. “One day on the sets of My Name Is Khan, I thought, ‘Maybe I know my job,’” he recalled. Despite his achievements, he maintains that luck played a significant role in his career. “I have always believed that I have been more fortunate than talented,” he said.

The filmmaker also took a swipe at the lack of self-awareness among many in the industry. “I am a realist, and I am not deluded. Delusion is a disease for which there is no vaccination. If only I had that vaccine, I would have given it to several people in this industry. They are all living in delusion,” he remarked.

A Realistic Approach to Filmmaking

Karan further elaborated on his perspective, saying, “We have to be diplomatic. I am not deluded. I am very much aware of my films and know the reasons why some of them worked and some didn’t. I am 80% realistic—20% might be in aspiration.”

Expressing his frustration with certain filmmakers, he added, “Sometimes I don’t understand these people. I don’t know whether they are lying to themselves or if they genuinely believe they made a great film. In reality, it is not.”

Karan Johar’s Filmography

Karan Johar made his directorial debut with the 1998 classic Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji. Over the years, he has delivered several blockbuster films, including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. His most recent directorial venture, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), featured Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, and Jaya Bachchan.

Despite being one of Bollywood’s most influential filmmakers, Karan Johar continues to maintain a grounded perspective on his success, while calling out the industry’s tendency for self-deception.
