Don’t you love taking vacations to your favourite places? On the other hand, you enjoy your plants as well. Regardless matter how enthusiastic you are about gardening and how much you like plants, everyone needs time to unwind and rest. Your lovely garden, on the other hand, will not take care of itself. Vacations of a week or longer will demand the deployment of specific methods to maintain the health and long-term survival of your plants.
So, to help you unwind while you’re away from your plants, we’ve put up a list of five simple ways to keep your balcony house plants while you’re away.
Just before you depart, water the plants. Keep both indoor and outdoor potted plants in a cool, dark spot out of direct sunshine so that the water doesn’t evaporate too rapidly in the presence of too much light and the soil stays moist for longer. Keep all of the plants together so that your buddy, who will be responsible for watering them while you are away, doesn’t forget.
In a plastic bottle, drill many holes at the top of the bottle. Fill the container half with water that flows it upside down before leaving for your journey. Place it in the soil so that the earth covers the openings in the bottle. When the soil becomes dry, water from the bottle will slowly trickle into it, nourishing it. Because of its efficiency, this method readily saves time, money, and water.
You can clean your pots while you’re gone if they have proper drainage. Fill a bathtub, sink, or other container halfway with water and place the potted plant inside (make sure it has drainage holes). The plants will have received precisely what they require—neither too little nor too much. If you do this, the plants would be able to continue for at least a week.
Make sure your plants don’t get too much direct sunshine. If they are planted in a flowerbed with direct sunlight access, create an artificial shade with a cover of thin white sheets, ensuring that air is distributed throughout the garden. Another option is to bring them inside and make a mini-greenhouse out of a transparent plastic bag with ventilation slits.
If your trip is going to be too long, enlist the help of a friend or neighbour to water your plants while you’re away.
