There’s a baoli or well, given the name of the place. The name Khari Baoli comes from a Stepwell and the work on this building was completed in the year 1551. It was a salty well, which means “Khari” or “Khara”, which no longer exists. Today there is no sign of water in Baoli.
History of Khari Baoli:
Dating back to the Mughal age, Khari Baoli was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the mid-1600s. Khari Baoli was established in the 17th century. This stepwell was inaugurated during the empire of Islam Shah, the son of Sher Shah Suri, stepwell was laid by Khwaja Abdullah Lazar Qureshi. Khari Baoli is situated in the historic Old Delhi area near Fatehpuri Masjid and it was built in 1650 by Fatehpuri Begum, who was one of the wives of Shah Jahan.
