Kunal Roy Kapur Dismisses Possibility Of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Sequel: ‘Not Needed’

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the 2013 blockbuster starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Kalki Koechlin, continues to captivate audiences even a decade after its release. The film was re-released in theatres last month, reigniting nostalgia among fans. However, the possibility of a sequel remains uncertain.

In a recent interview with Bollywood Bubble, actor Kunal Roy Kapur, who played Taran Khanna in the film, expressed his doubts about a follow-up. “It is complete. It is already done, right? The journeys of those characters are done. They are not needed really,” he said, ruling out the need for a continuation.

Aditi and Taran’s Future

In Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Kalki Koechlin’s character, Aditi, moves on from her one-sided love for Avinash (Aditya Roy Kapur) and marries Taran, played by Kunal. When asked whether Aditi and Taran would still be together years later, Kunal shared his thoughts: “Given the graph of the movie, they would not be in a divorce court. They would definitely be a happily married couple. I can’t tell if she would be happily married to Taran, but he would probably be happy.”

Ranbir Kapoor on the Sequel Possibility

While Kunal dismisses the idea of a sequel, Ranbir Kapoor had earlier hinted that director Ayan Mukerji had a concept for one. In a 2023 fan interaction, the actor revealed that Mukerji had once considered a continuation of the story.

“I think Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani would make a good sequel,” Ranbir had said. “Ayan also had a very nice story, I remember, but then he went into this Brahmastra journey. But never say never. He might make it after a couple of years. I think the story will be 10 years forward, exploring where Bunny, Naina, Avi, and Aditi are in their lives. I think it’ll be quite interesting and nice to explore those characters.”

For now, while the film remains a fan favorite, an official sequel remains uncertain. Whether Ayan Mukerji revisits the characters in the future remains to be seen.
