Carl Weathers, the iconic actor renowned for his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the beloved “Rocky” franchise, has passed away at the age of 76. On Friday, his manager confirmed the news, citing undisclosed causes for his demise.
Carl Weathers, a retired footballer, gained fame as Apollo Creed, the spirited boxer, alongside Stallone’s Rocky Balboa. His dynamic performance captivated audiences worldwide. His character, is inspired by the spirit of Muhammad Ali. Captivating audiences, he pioneered positive depictions of Black characters, breaking stereotypes in early mainstream cinema.
Apart from his indelible mark in the “Rocky” series, Weathers showcased his versatility across various genres, from starring in the 1987 science fiction horror classic “Predator” alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger to recent appearances in popular franchises like “The Mandalorian” and “Star Wars.”
Sylvester Stallone, Weathers’ longtime friend and collaborator, paid tribute to the late actor in a heartfelt video, reminiscing about their journey together and acknowledging Weathers’ pivotal role in his own rise to stardom. “When he walked into that room, and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness,” Stallone recalled. “But I didn’t realize how great. I never could have accomplished what we did with Rocky without him.”
