Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana’s latest offering, Doctor G opened up to mixed reviews. Not just this, the film failed to garner numbers on box office. Based on the subject of male gynaecologist, the movie had some shortcomings in terms of scripts and narration. And its director, Anubhuti Kashyap, who is sister of filmmakers Abhinav Kashyap and Anurag Kashyap cannot agree more. In a recent interview, she talked about her takeaways from this much-hyped project.

A coming-of-age social tale of a sexist gynaecology student portrayed by Khurrana, Doctor G is Kashyap’s first feature film. Speaking on went amiss in her flick, Anubhuti stated, “There were a lot of wrong decisions made, even in the script and narrative arc.”

Anubhuti wrote the script of Doctor G with Sumit Saxena, Saurabh Bharat and Vishal Wagh. She now feels that all of them have different tones of telling a story and this is one of the reasons why Doctor G could not strike the right chord of audiences. “Sumit and I are different writers. [That resulted in] tonal differences. More than regrets, there has been learning. The biggest one is that you must be completely satisfied with the script before going to shoot,” said Anubhuti.

Furthermore, Anubhuti revealed that she took inspiration for making Doctor G from her brother Anurag Kashyap’s movies but later realised that every director is born with a different approach. She quoted, “Anurag’s scripts are mostly half-written, and he forms them as the films are made. I came from that school [of filmmaking]. So, [when approaching Doctor G], there were certain parts that weren’t finished in the script, but we thought, ‘Let’s shoot it now, we will see it later.’ The film would’ve probably worked better had it been completely my script, giving me more control while shooting it. I changed the lead character from being ‘out-and-out misogynistic’ to ‘casually sexist’.”

On the concluding note, Anubhuti Kashyap said that the opening figures of her maiden film were better than expected and also viewers’ word of mouth became the saving grace for her.
