Manoj Bajpayee Opens Up About Knee Injury During ‘Despatch’ Shoot: ‘It’s Still Healing’
Actor Manoj Bajpayee revealed he sustained a knee injury while filming the crime drama Despatch, directed by Kanu Behl. The film, which stars Bajpayee as a relentless investigative journalist uncovering a massive financial scam, premiered at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on Thursday night.
Speaking at a press conference, Bajpayee shared the challenges he faced during the shoot. “This film explores both the inner and outer worlds of a journalist. While navigating these worlds, I ended up injuring my knee. It’s still healing,” he said. Adding a touch of humor, the actor quipped, “I’ve researched solutions everywhere, from America to Japan.”
Despatch, co-written by Behl and Ishani Banerjee, also features Shahana Goswami and Arrchita Agarwal. The movie, inspired by real events, will begin streaming on ZEE5 from December 13.
Calling the script “unique and real,” Bajpayee credited the project for helping him grow as an actor and fostering friendships with his co-stars and director. The production faced significant hurdles, as the team commenced work during the pandemic.
“The script was written in a way that no location was repeated, posing a distinct production challenge. During the Delta wave of COVID-19, the entire team was infected. We overcame those obstacles, resumed shooting, and now the film is set to release,” he recounted.
Kanu Behl, known for acclaimed films like Titli and Agra, shared his perspective on filmmaking, rejecting the notion of cinema as a vehicle for messaging.
“I don’t see myself as someone who has a message to give. A film’s job isn’t to stand on a pedestal and dictate what life or the world is about,” he said. Behl emphasized storytelling rooted in personal experiences, adding, “When you tell a story with courage and honesty, its direction becomes clear. As for hope or despair, these concepts are endless, just like life itself.”
Despatch marks another milestone for Bajpayee, whose versatile performances have consistently garnered critical acclaim. The actor’s latest role promises to shed light on the fast-paced, ethically complex world of investigative journalism.
Fans can catch the riveting tale when it debuts on ZEE5 next month.
