Margot Robbie revealed in a recent interview why the much-discussed female-led Pirates of the Caribbean film she was to feature in is no longer happening.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Margot Robbie provided an update on her long-debated female-led Pirates of the Caribbean film. The actress disclosed that the project has been cancelled and explained why. It was announced in June 2020 that Robbie would star in a new Pirates film penned by screenwriter Christina Hodson.
Given the popularity of Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Disney was in the early stages of development on Robbie’s Pirates as well as a second revamp penned by franchise veterans Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin in 2020.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously acknowledged that two projects were in the works, one with Margot and one without her.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the actress discussed how the much-discussed movie was eventually abandoned. “We had a concept and we were planning it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led not fully female-led, but just a unique kind of story,” she explained. “But I suppose they don’t want to do it,” she added regarding the Disney idea.
As disappointed as fans were to find that Johnny Depp would not be returning for the Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off, they were overjoyed to see Margot Robbie take on the role.
However, the actress has stated that the film has been cancelled since Disney appears to have lost interest in the concept.
After Johnny Depp won his Virginia defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard this year, various speculations suggested that the actor may return to his popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as Captain Jack Sparrow, the iconic character he originated, would be reprising his role.
According to reports, Depp was promised USD 301 million by the studios to reprise his fan-favourite character onscreen, while the actor’s representatives refuted the rumours.
Following his trial victory, the actor has released a music album and is working on a directorial project with Al Pacino.
