Mindy Kaling recently teamed up with Sharpie and Paper Mate for their new campaign. Being a lifelong lover of Sharpies, she swears that the colourful markers helped her imagination fly.
“We use them on cards when we break stories,” she shared about her process. “The Office” star is happy to go back to her “Dunder Mifflin” roots as she encourages people to explore their creativity.
On finding creative outlets
Mindy, who played Kelly Kapoor in the famous TV series “The Office,” is also a terrific writer. She created the Netflix original “Never Have I Ever” starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, which ran for 4 seasons. About the partnership with the stationery brands, Kaling shares her thoughts about finding creative outlets using Sharpies.
“I’ve used Sharpies since I was 24 and a comedy writer because the way that we write stories is we would use the traditional Sharpies that you think of — the black, red, green,” she said. And when she received colourful gel pens and creative mariners, she was over the top.
Besides, creativity doesn’t just mean art, music, drawing, and acting. One could also simply doodle or write down their private thoughts in a journal. Mindy Kaling has a 6-year-old daughter who does that all the time.
Secret to Hollywood success
There is no secret recipe to gaining success in Hollywood except hard work, says Mindy. “What I learned I had to do was I had to act, I had to learn how to edit, and I learned how to direct and hold a camera;” she did it because no one else would do it for her. “I couldn’t afford to pay someone,” Mindy Kaling said.
Projects Mindy had written include “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” “The Mindy Project,” and “Champions,” which became hugely successful. Her latest collaboration with Kate Hudson has Mindy super excited. This is also the first time that Mindy got to know Hudson closely in the 20 years she has been in Hollywood.
“Kate is completely dazzling to me. I had never worked with her before I’d met her a couple of times. What’s incredible is that when we cast her in this role, which is so exciting, we were like, “An amazing performer and a movie star wants to do a TV series,” which is sort of the goal when you’re a TV creator.” The “Mother’s Day” actress surely brings that kind of star wattage to the basketball comedy series from Netflix.
Mindy Kaling misses the old days
Mindy says that her assistant is clueless about penmanship because her generation doesn’t write that much. “And I’m so old, I’m twice her age. For me, cursive was something I completely loved and fetishized as a kid.” She currently produces shows under Kaling International.
The 44-year-old Indian-origin actress is recently in the news for using the weight-loss drug Ozempic. Her split with ex-boyfriend and BFF B.J. Novak, her co-star in “The Office” also made waves. Mindy Kaling laughs off the rumours as Novak is her children’s godfather.
