Mukesh Khanna Expresses Concern Over Ranbir Kapoor Cast In Ram: ‘Whenever I Look At His Face…’

Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna has expressed his views on the challenges of portraying Lord Ram in contemporary adaptations. Speaking candidly in an interview with Mid-Day, Khanna emphasised the legacy of Arun Govil, who immortalized the character in the classic Ramayan television series.

“Whoever Plays Ram Must Embody Ram”

Khanna stressed that an actor taking on the role of Lord Ram must exhibit not just acting prowess but also personal virtues that align with the character. “What Arun Govil did with the role has become the gold standard,” he remarked. “Whoever plays Ram must embody Ram; he shouldn’t look like Raavan. If, in their real life, they are a lampat chhichhora (lewd hooligan), it will reflect on screen.”

He further opined that playing Ram demands a level of discipline. “If you’re portraying Lord Ram, you’re not allowed to party or drink. But, ultimately, who am I to decide who plays Ram?” he added.

Concerns Over Ranbir Kapoor’s Casting

Khanna also commented on rumours surrounding Ranbir Kapoor potentially portraying Lord Ram. Referring to Kapoor’s recent role in Animal, Khanna noted that it may influence public perception. “Ranbir Kapoor is a fine actor and a beacon of the Kapoor family. But when I look at his face, he should look like Ram. His recent role in Animal highlighted a negative personality, and I hope that doesn’t impact this portrayal,” he said.

“Be Careful With Casting”

The seasoned actor urged filmmakers to exercise caution in casting decisions, citing past examples of missteps. “Prabhas wasn’t accepted as Ram in Adipurush, despite being a huge star. It wasn’t about his acting ability but because he didn’t visually or spiritually align with Ram,” he explained.

Khanna’s comments underline the unique challenges of bringing a revered character like Lord Ram to life on screen. With audience expectations rooted in cultural and spiritual reverence, the casting process for any new adaptation remains a critical aspect of its success.
