Bollywood veteran Naseeruddin Shah is a highly acclaimed actor who besides his art is known for his outspoken nature. The actor doesn’t doesn’t mince words when putting forward his opinion on various issues.
Naseeruddin criticises ‘Gadar 2’
In a recent interview with Free Press Journal, Naseeruddin took a subtle at Anil Sharma’s ‘Gadar 2’ starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in prominent roles. He tagged it as ‘regressive’ and ‘jingoistic.’ The 73-year old actor shared how the rising success of such films can have a negative impact on society.
Shah stated that the more jingoist one is, the more popular he will become because this is what has been ruling the country at present. He said that it’s not enough to love your country, but beat drums about it and one has to create imaginary enemies. People are not realising that what they are doing is really harmful. The massive popularity of films like ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘The Kerala Story’ and ‘Gadar 2’, is disturbing to the actor.
Furthermore, Naseeruddin mentioned that films made on real life tragedies made by directors like Sudhir Mishra, Anubhav Sinha, and Hansal Mehta don’t even get any attention. He quoted, “They are trying to portray the truth of their times. But it’s important that these filmmakers don’t lose heart and continue telling stories. They will be responsible for posterity. A hundred years later, people will see ‘Bheed’ and they will also see ‘Gadar 2’. They will realise which one portrays the truth of our times, because film is the only medium which could do that. So, regressive is a pretty mild word for what’s going on.”
For the unversed, ‘Gadar 2’ has created a stir on the box-office. The film has shattered several records on the ticket window since its release on August 11, 2023. It has approximately collected Rs 515 Crore in India and is still going strong in the theatres.
