OTT platform Netflix has been embroiled in controversies due to the web series ‘Baby Reindeer’. In fact, a Scottish woman Fiona Harvey claims that the character of Martha in this series, played by Jessica Gunning, is based on her. Regarding this, the woman has sued Netflix, accusing it of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and violation of her right to publicity. Fiona Harvey has sought damages of $ 170 million (about Rs 1,420 crore in Indian currency) from Netflix.

Baby Reindeer

‘Baby Reindeer’ was released on Netflix on April 11. It was well received by the audience, due to which it was soon stamped as a hit. The series is based on the play of the same name written by Richard Gadd. In ‘Baby Reindeer’, Richard Gadd plays a fictional character of himself, whose name is Donnie Dunn. The series shows how Donnie Dunn tries to become a comedian from a barman and how he gets into trouble while trying to attract a crazy female stalker named Martha.

After the release of the series, the woman who made the allegations appeared on Piers Morgan’s YouTube show. The lawsuit filed by Harvey states that Netflix has not confirmed the true story told by Richard Gadd.

Fiona Harvey alleges that lies have been shown about her in the ‘Baby Reindeer’ series. One of these lies is that Harvey was sentenced to five years in prison and the other is that he sexually assaulted Gadd. Harvey complains that the lies shown against her in the series have ruined her life and Netflix and Richard Gadd have destroyed Harvey’s honor, character, and life. The case states that the first episode of the series states that it is a true story. Harvey has called it the biggest lie in TV history. He has accused Netflix and Richard Gadd of telling this lie out of greed and fame, as it can attract viewers and also make money.
