India will be returning to the Para Athletics World Championships in 2025, after New Delhi has been unveiled as the host for the prestigious global event – with it being held for the first time in the country. Set to be held in the very iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from September 26 – October 5, the 2025 championships will be the 12th edition of the event with over 1,000 athletes from over 100 countries in teams.
A much loved event in the Para sports calendar, the Para Athletics World Championships indicates India’s growing place in the international sporting arena as a host city. The venue will also host the World Para Athletics Grand Prix from March 11-13, 2025, after which it will become a permanent venue for the World Para Athletics Grand Prix, continuing to play a key role in Para athletics in India.
Being that this will happen just before the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games, it’s a really important event for athletes and really important as a stepping stone going forward to the next Paralympics. The championships will offer an opportunity not just to elite athletes but also to help increase the visibility of Para sports globally on the back of a big and diverse country like India, the head of World Para Athletics, Paul Fitzgerald, said. The inclusions are expected to make a difference in shaping the societies’ perspective about people with disabilities as more inclusive.
