A profound wave of grief has swept across the Indian entertainment industry as veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, who immortalised the character of Karna in B.R. Chopra’s epic television series Mahabharat, passed away on Wednesday. The beloved actor was 68 and had been bravely battling cancer. His demise marks the end of an era for a generation that grew up watching him bring one of literature’s most complex and noble characters to life with unparalleled grace and dignity.

Pankaj Dheer’s career was a rich tapestry of memorable roles across both television and cinema, but it was his portrayal of the tragic hero Karna that became his definitive legacy. When Mahabharat first aired in 1988, Dheer’s powerful performance, his commanding screen presence, and his nuanced depiction of Karna’s internal conflicts—his loyalty, his generosity, and his poignant suffering—resonated deeply with audiences across the nation. The role became so inextricably linked with him that for millions, he was not just an actor playing a part; he was Karna.

Such was the impact of his portrayal that his image was often used in textbooks to depict the mythological character, a rare and incredible honour for any actor. The public’s adoration went even further, with temples reportedly built in his name and an eight-foot-tall statue erected to commemorate his iconic role. Dheer himself held the character in the highest regard. He was so protective of his legacy as Karna that he famously declined offers to play other roles in subsequent remakes of the epic, stating he did not want to confuse or disappoint the audience that had so lovingly accepted him in that specific part.

While Karna remained his most celebrated role, Dheer’s versatility as an actor was evident in a career that spanned decades. He made his mark in Bollywood with significant roles in numerous films, sharing screen space with some of the industry’s biggest stars. He was seen in films like Baadshah alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Tumko Na Bhool Payenge with Salman Khan, and the action-packed Zameen with Ajay Devgn. His filmography showcased his ability to adapt to various genres, from action to drama to comedy.

His presence on the small screen was equally formidable. Beyond Mahabharat, he appeared in several popular television shows, including Sasural Simar Ka and Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, consistently delivering performances that were both compelling and memorable.

The news of his passing was confirmed by The Cine and TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA), which informed that his last rites would be held in Vile Parle, Mumbai. Tributes immediately began pouring in from colleagues and fans. Actor Arjun, who played his on-screen rival Arjuna in Mahabharat, shared a heartfelt message of condolence on social media.

The family’s grief was poignantly expressed by his son, actor Nikitin Dheer, known for his powerful roles in films like Chennai Express and Jodhaa Akbar. Nikitin shared a moving message on his Instagram story, which was widely circulated, capturing the profound sense of loss and the difficulty of coming to terms with his father’s absence. Pankaj Dheer leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, dedication, and a single, towering performance that will forever be etched in the annals of Indian television history.
