Manoj Bajpayee, in a recent interview with one of the media houses, lamented that he is cast in roles of middle-class or poor people and never of a rich person. “The only film before Gulmohar in which I played a rich man was Zubeidaa. It was Shyam Benegal’s belief. In Veer-Zaara, I played a Pakistani politician. I had two scenes in it, but Yashji was adamant that I do it. He cast me after watching Pinjar,” he said.

Manoj further said that filmmakers were quite confused about showing him as a rich man. These filmmakers had a vision that came from observing life closely. Others have a problem showing me as rich. The roles I played were either based on a middle-class or poor story. No director can see me in a rich man’s role. This stereotyping still exists in the industry.
