Prison Radio In Haryana To Enter Its Second Phase, Conceived And Created By Prison Reformer Vartika Nanda

With the launch of jail radios in three prisons of Haryana, the Prison Department is now set to enter its second phase. Four jails that are selected for the second phase of Prison Radio are Central Jail 1 Hisar, District Jail, Karnal, District Jail, Rohtak and District Jail, Gurugram.

The first phase included three prisons of Haryana, District Jail Panipat, District Jail Faridabad and Central Jail Ambala.

Panipat Jail Radio was Haryana’s first prison radio which was launched by Shri Ranjit Singh, Jail Minister, Shri Rajeev Arora, IAS, ACS, Home, Jail Department, Government of Haryana, Shri K. Selvaraj, IPS, Director General of Prisons, Haryana, Shri Devi Dayal, Superintendent Jail and Dr. Vartika Nanda, Founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation January 16, 2021. Following this, jail radio was inaugurated in District Jail Faridabad and Central Jail Ambala with Shri Jai Kishan Chhiller and Shri Lakhbir Brar as their Superintendents.

Prison Radio in Haryana is the brainchild of Vartika Nanda. She has also undertaken the responsibility of the audition and training of inmates. She heads the Department of Journalism in Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University and is the founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation. She is credited to start prison radio in District Jail Agra in 2019. This is the oldest surviving prison building in India. These prison radios are a step towards making the Tinka Model of Prison Reforms which will be later presented to the Government of India.

The second phase of prison radio in Haryana is scheduled to start from this week.

Vartika Nanda is the recipient of Stri Shakti Award by the President of India in 2014. She was given this honor for her contribution in the field of media and literature.
