Priyanka Chopra Lauds Bridgerton 2 For ‘Desi Representation’- Deets Inside
It’s an exciting time for South Asian performers in the industry, especially with quality projects like Bridgerton Season 2 and others making their way onto streaming platforms.
The luxurious and competitive world of London high society during the Regency period of the early 1800s is depicted in ‘Bridgerton,’ based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling series of novels. The heated courtship between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, was the subject of the first season of the romantic period drama (Rege-Jean Page).
Though the series’ plot is supposed to follow our viscount as he searches for a wife, one could argue that a much more important plot is unfolding. We are introduced to the Sharmas, an Indian family whose culture is subtly woven into the plot. Shonda Rhimes creates a screen presence that we don’t see nearly enough of. Many individuals have expressed their feelings on seeing Asian representation in the show before, during, and after the season, as well as their admiration for Shonda Rhimes, who continues to allow underrepresented performers to woo us.
Now, our very own Desi girl, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who has been a fan of the program since the first season, has spoken out about how amazing it was to see the second season with desi representation. The actress even mentioned the show’s leads, Simone Ashley and Charithra Chandran, and how important representation is. She captioned the picture, “I have to say, it’s so wonderful to see desi representation on mainstream TV. It was such an anomaly when I started. Love the show and the Sharma sisters.”
The first season of the acclaimed Netflix drama focused on Regé-Jean Page, while the second season introduced the Sharma sisters to the franchise, which featured Charithra Chandran as Edwina Sharma and Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma. The second season will feature eight episodes, each lasting 50-70 minutes.
Chopra’s most recent film appearance was in ‘The Matrix Resurrection.’ Next up for the actress, who is also a prominent producer, are the films’ Text For You’ and ‘Citadel.’
