Recently, global star Priyanka Chopra Jonas looked back on her breakthrough role in the 2009 film Kaminey, expressing her surprise and gratitude that film director and music composer Vishal Bhardwaj chose her despite her then-commercial image.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas looked back on her 2009 hit film Kaminey, calling it a big turning point in her career. In an emotional Instagram post, she shared how director Vishal Bhardwaj chose her to play the role of Sweety Bhope, even though she was mostly known for her glamorous and commercial roles at the time.

Priyanka Chopra looks back at her Kaminey casting experience

While filming Dostana in Miami with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, Priyanka noticed a missed call from Bhardwaj. What?? I had wanted to work with him forever and never thought he would cast me because of my ‘commercial’ image at the time,” she wrote.

The director went to Miami to tell her the story. Priyanka recalled saying to him: “Well, she has approximately 8 scenes.” Bhardwaj assured her, “With us working on it, it will end up being so much more. Trust me.” She agreed, saying she was ‘just greedy’ to work with the famous filmmaker. Vishal, in return, promised to create something amazing for her as thanks for taking the role, and a few years later, they teamed up again for 7 Khoon Maaf.

Priyanka wrote that Kaminey was an important turning point in her journey, she penned: “I learned so much from the master @vishalrbhardwaj, how to research, prepare and then surrender to the part.” She also appreciated Shahid Kapoor’s acting in his double role, admired Amol Gupte’s scary villain role, and happily recalled meeting her close friend Mubina Rattonsey on the sets for the first time. She shared old photos, videos, and the movie poster, and asked fans if they had watched the cult classic again.

Celebrating 16 Years of Kaminey

Kaminey, released in 2009, was a crime drama that felt very different from the usual Bollywood movies of that time. With its unique direction, memorable music, and Vishal Bhardwaj’s intense storytelling, the film showed the dark world of gang wars, corruption, and greed. Shahid Kapoor gave one of his best performances, while Priyanka Chopra impressed everyone with her strong role as Sweety Bhope, even though her screen time was short.
