In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga addressed one of the most controversial scenes in the movie. When asked about the scene where Ranbir Kapoor’s character, Ranvijay, compliments his girlfriend Gitanjani (played by Rashmika Mandanna) for having a ‘big pelvis’ solely for its shock value, the director acknowledged the question and referred to it as a compliment.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Ranbir Kapoor’s scene
Sandeep clarified why Ranbir’s character opted for an indirect approach in expressing his emotions to Rashmika Mandanna’s character in the scene. “He attempted a different method to convey his feelings because it was her engagement day, and they hadn’t been in touch. Coming outright and saying, ‘Listen Gitanjali, I really love your pelvis’ with such force. Instead, he is attempting to explain a theory related to the character and the film’s title. This ensures that when the audience watches the film, the theory he refers to doesn’t seem ambiguous.”
Sandeep: I thought ‘big pelvis’ scene was a compliment
“I envisioned shooting a scene where he would play with flower petals and gently touch her feet. Although I had this idea, I decided not to show it. On the day of the shoot, I thought, ‘Let’s not do that and give another shock,'” revealed Vanga. “He felt she was walking away, realizing that if he let her go without saying more, she would be gone. Trying to express that he sees a future with her, that he wants to marry her, he found himself in a situation where boys behave differently. They may have one intention, but end up saying something else. Ranbir was given this brief too. He portrayed the character not knowing what to say, and he comes up with ‘Gitanjali has a big pelvis.’ It’s his way of giving a reason that he envisions a future, marriage, and having babies with her. I saw it as a compliment, never considering it ugly,” explained Vanga, describing the scene’s continuity to the host.
Go back to the scene
In the scene, Ranbir Kapoor’s character, Ranvijay, tells Gitanjali, “You have a big pelvis,” after she decides to leave her fiance for him. Responding to the line, a seemingly irritated Gitanjali asks, “Are you calling me fat?” Ranvijay insists it’s a compliment and further adds that it means she has ‘child-bearing hips.’
