During an interview with Humans of Bombay, Randeep Hooda shared his experience of collaborating with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on the set of the film ‘Sarbjit’. Hooda praised Rai’s sincere presence and professionalism, noting their limited on-screen interactions due to their separate scenes.
He remarked, “She was wonderful, incredibly polite, and excelled in her role. Despite our minimal on-set encounters, she remained true to her reputation whenever we crossed paths.”
However, Hooda also discusses the challenges faced in portraying authenticity in the film, particularly with Rai’s appearance. Additionally, Amitabh Bachchan praises Hooda’s performance in the movie, further highlighting the dynamics of the film’s production and the recognition garnered by its cast.
Aishwarya’s Unreal Aura: Challenges in Portrayal
Under the direction of Omung Kumar, ‘Sarbjit’ depicts the biographical journey of Sarabjit Singh, who faced incarceration by the Pakistan military on charges of terrorism and espionage. Additionally, Randeep noted during the conversation that despite diligent attempts by the production team to portray Aishwarya in a simpler, more authentic light, they encountered challenges. He observed that despite efforts, the actress appeared somewhat artificial.
He said, “They tried their best to make her look real, but she’s so unreal.”
Bonding Challenges: Reflecting on On-Set Connections
While Randeep Hooda formed a close bond with Sarabjit’s real family, particularly his late sister, he expressed regrets over the inability to establish a strong connection with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Reflecting on missed opportunities, Hooda emphasized the impactful relationships forged during the filming process.
He added, “While making the movie, more than Aishwarya, I formed a great bond with Sarabjit’s sister. She has passed away now, and she desired that I come and give fire to her funeral pyre, which I did. I wish I had more time with her, she was a great lady, and she looked after Sarabjit’s kids. They’re all well settled, I’m in touch with them. That movie had a real-life impact.”

During a special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 15, Amitabh Bachchan lauded Randeep Hooda’s performance in ‘Sarbjit’, expressing admiration for his portrayal of the titular character.
Bachchan’s praise underscored Hooda’s dedication to embodying the role authentically, garnering recognition for his compelling performance.
Big B said, “Randeep, I wish to tell you that I’m a big fan. I’ve watched many of his films, and he performed brilliantly in all of them. Randeep, you had done a movie with Aishwarya Rai-Sarbjit. It’s based on a real-life story. He accidentally crosses the border and is arrested and convicted. In the film, you see Randeep holed up in a small cell. He lived in those very conditions. I’ve never done that in my life.”
