January 27, 2022

The Meghalaya Tableaux commemorated the state’s 50th anniversary and is a tribute to women-led cooperative societies and self-help groups (SHGs)

Bamboo and Cane Handicrafts, as well as Lakadong Turmeric, are on display. The success of these products is a testament to the women-led cooperative society’s tireless labor and contribution to the state economy.

The tableau’s front half portrays a lady constructing a bamboo basket. A Meghalayan woman sits surrounded by bamboo and cane objects. Alternatives made of mass-produced plastic have supplanted such items.

The back half of this tableau depicts the traditional farming and processing of Lakadong Turmeric. Women-led cooperative societies and SHGs from the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya are responsible for the global popularity of Lakadong Turmeric, which is known for its high nutritional content.

Women-led cooperative organizations and self-help groups drive the entire value chain (SHGs.) The back of the tableaux bears Meghalaya’s state logo celebrating the state’s 50th year.

About the Celebration

The Republic Day procession features 21 tableaux, including 12 representing various states and Union Territories and nine representing ministries.

This year’s celebrations are extra significant because Republic Day coincides with the 75th anniversary of the country’s independence, and it is being commemorated as “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” across the country.

The Ministry of Defense has planned a series of new activities to commemorate the occasion, including a primary march on Rajpath on January 26 and a “Beating the Retreat” celebration at Vijay Chowk on January 29.

Every year, the Republic Day celebrations will now last a week, from January 23 to January 30. The festivities began on January 23, the birth anniversary of legendary liberation warrior Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and will end on January 30, Martyrs’ Day.
