Tom Selleck, popularly known for his role as Richard in sitcom, FRIENDS, discussed his special bond with Matthew Perry while on the set. On a walk down memory lane, Selleck revealed a special bond with Matthew Perry on the set of “Friends.” The details of their intriguing role reversal are revealed here.
Selleck gets into Chandler’s character
Richard Bruke, aka Tom Selleck, as Chandler Bing; just picture it!
Selleck’s character Richard Burke made the odd decision to adopt a more Chandler-like persona in a comical episode. Releasing the information, Selleck stated, “We had this role reversal thing going, where Richard tried to be like them and them like me.”
Mastering the Chandler
It turns out that Selleck had a difficult time playing Chandler. Perry’s sardonic delivery was hard for him to take, especially for a remark regarding his football talents. “Could that shot be any prettier?” Selleck acknowledges. He detailed this speaking pattern that Matthew had that he was not aware of. He went straight to Perry, the man himself, for advice.
Perry’s iconic line
Perry’s famous delivery left an impression. Selleck recalls, “Matt told me, ‘It’s a joke, Tom. It’s the way he says it.’ That was his signature.” Picture Selleck asking Perry repeatedly, “Can you say it again?” This a hilarious behind-the-scenes moment.
More About Selleck-Perry Friendship
When Selleck joined “Friends” in Season 2, he and actor John Bennett Perry, Perry’s father, had a unique relationship. Selleck recalls, “But every day I’d see Matthew, and I’d ask him, ‘How’s your father?’ And he’d always smile, and we’d catch up.”
On-set friendships that were genuine created a cosy atmosphere.
Selleck treasures the moments of humour shared on production, particularly in “The One Where Old Yeller Dies,” a scene from Season 2. Cue the hilarity as Richard transforms into Chandler and Joey transforms into Richard! The home fell as Perry entered while Joey and Chandler worshipped.
Matthew was a raw talent
Selleck was not shy about complimenting Perry’s acting prowess: “He was a natural. It’s easy to say this now that Matthew’s gone, but it’s true. He was, in my opinion, the most gifted member of a gifted bunch.” From one gifted performer to another, high fives.
