When Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani came out in July 2023, the scene where Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi kissed got a lot of attention. Now, Shabana talked about the kissing scene in an interview with Zoom.

She said that her niece, star Tabu, makes fun of it. Tabu made her kiss with Dharmendra in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani a lot of noise in the movie, Shabana said. 

It was in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani that Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi played lovers who had lost touch.

Shabana Azmi told Tabu, “My niece is here, she’s my sister.” Vo kehti hai aankh hila ke rakh diya business. Sab aapki age ki ladkiyaan keh rahi hai ke kiss hogi toh hum karenge (Tabu is so naughty; she makes fun of me for making a big fuss in the business world). She says, “Now all the actresses my age are saying they’ll do a movie if it has a kissing scene.”

Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi play long-lost lovers in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. They meet again after many years when their grandkids, played by Alia Bhatt as Rani Chatterjee and Ranveer Singh as Rocky Randhawa, fall in love. It is thought that Jaya Bachchan is married to Dharmendra, and the two of them are Rocky’s grandparents. Tatya Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, and Shabana were all cast as Alia’s family.

When Shabana Azmi Kissed

In an interview from last year, Shabana Azmi talked about the kiss and said, “I never thought it would cause so much trouble!” A lot of people laugh and cheer when we kiss. It never came up while shooting. I haven’t kissed many people on screen before, that’s true. No one wouldn’t want to kiss Dharmendra, though.

Shabana also talked about how her husband and songwriter Javed Akhtar felt about her kiss with Dharmendra on screen. “Oh, he wasn’t bothered,” she said. But what bothered him was how wild I was being. I was cheering, whistling, applauding, and yelling the whole movie. ‘I don’t know this woman sitting next to me,’ he thought. I lost it from excitement.”
