Shilpa Shirodkar is a well-known name in the Bollywood industry. She has worked in many hit films in the 90s. Shirodkar made a distance from the industry in the year 2000 after getting married to UK-based banker Aparesh Ranjit. In a recent interview, she has revealed that despite working with industry veterans, she had to face rejections many times.
In the era of 90s, Shilpa created a stir with her item dance. But due to obesity and increased weight, she lost out on many opportunities. When asked about losing the song ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ to Malaika Arora, the actress said, ‘Who would let go of song with Shah Rukh Khan? For this song, Farah Khan came to me and said that she wanted to cast me in it. But later they didn’t take me just because I was fat and signed Malaika Arora.
Taking the conversation forward, Shilpa was asked if she found it difficult to move further in her career because of her looks and weight? She replied, ‘I don’t remember that because of my weight or the way I looked, the scale of my success or the love I got was decided. These things didn’t matter in the nineties. We used to work on multiple projects at the same time.’
Shilpa Shirodkar credited her film career to Mithun Chakraborty and Anil Kapoor. ‘I remember the casting of a Telugu film was going on in the 90s and Anil Kapoor was shooting in Hyderabad. He took my photo album to the producer and director and I got the film. I am working in this industry today because of these two.’
For the unversed, Shilpa Shirodkar made a comeback to acting in 2013 with Zee TV show ‘Ek Mutthi Aasmaan’. She is currently waiting for some meaty roles in movies.
