Singer Abhijeet Under Fire For Calling Mahatma Gandhi ‘Father Of Pakistan’, Faces Legal Action
Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya has come under fire for a controversial remark in which he referred to Mahatma Gandhi as the “Father of Pakistan.” The comment, made during a podcast interview, has sparked widespread outrage, prompting Pune-based lawyer Asim Sarode to serve a legal notice demanding a written apology from the singer.
The Controversial Statement
During the podcast, Bhattacharya drew parallels between legendary music composer RD Burman and Gandhi, saying, “Like Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation, RD Burman was the father of the nation in the world of music.” He further stated, “Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation for Pakistan and not India.”
The remarks have been criticized as disrespectful to Gandhi’s legacy and historically inaccurate.

Legal Action Threatened
Sarode, representing Manish Deshpande and other law students, issued the notice accusing Bhattacharya of crossing ethical and legal boundaries. Sarode highlighted Gandhi’s pivotal role in promoting Hindu-Muslim unity and opposing the partition of India. “Gandhi worked tirelessly for national integration, famously stating, ‘To accept partition, it will be over my dead body,’” Sarode said.
The legal notice also emphasized Gandhi’s global reputation, noting that more than 150 countries have issued postal stamps in his honor. “Such a statement disrespects the legacy of a leader who is recognized worldwide for his contributions to peace and non-violence,” the notice reads.
Sarode has demanded a written apology from Bhattacharya, warning of criminal prosecution if he fails to comply. According to the lawyer, the singer’s comments could mislead the public and hurt sentiments.
Singer Yet to Respond
As of now, Bhattacharya has not made any public statement addressing the legal notice. The controversy has reignited discussions on the responsibility of public figures in making historically accurate and respectful comments.
Mahatma Gandhi’s Legacy
Mahatma Gandhi, widely regarded as the “Father of the Nation” in India, played a key role in the country’s struggle for independence and was a staunch advocate of non-violence and religious harmony. His work continues to inspire millions globally.
For now, the legal battle looms as the singer faces mounting criticism for his remarks.
